說(shuō)到“下下周”的英語(yǔ)，很多人的第一反應(yīng)是不是“next next week”？這么說(shuō)很Chinglish，正確的說(shuō)法是“the week after the next”。

英語(yǔ)中有很多和時(shí)間有關(guān)的俚語(yǔ)，今天就和大家分享其中一些，以后見(jiàn)到就不會(huì)再一頭霧水啦。

1.around the clock

“around the clock”的意思是“全天候，晝夜不斷的”，如果用來(lái)形容某個(gè)事物，說(shuō)明它是24小時(shí)全天候營(yíng)業(yè)的。

The hotel's service is great. T here is always someone available to help you around the clock.

這家酒店的服務(wù)很棒，總有人可以24小時(shí)幫助你。

2.call it a day/night

這個(gè)表達(dá)的意思是“到此為止”，可以表示暫時(shí)停止，也可以用作俚語(yǔ)，表示某事已經(jīng)完全結(jié)束了。

Right guys, you've worked really hard. I think it's time to call it a night, I'll see you all again tomorrow.

是的，伙計(jì)們，你們真的很努力。我覺(jué)得該結(jié)束了，我們明天再見(jiàn)。

Neither of us was happy in the relationship, so we decided to call it a day.

我們倆對(duì)這段感情關(guān)系都不滿意，所以決定分手。

3.against the clock

這個(gè)相信很多小伙伴都不陌生，翻譯成中文就是“爭(zhēng)分奪秒”。

I worked day and night against the clock to get this done on time.

為了按時(shí)完成這項(xiàng)工作，我夜以繼日爭(zhēng)分奪秒地工作。

4.call time

“call time”的意思是“宣布暫停”。

I think we should call time on this project.

我認(rèn)為我們應(yīng)該停止這個(gè)項(xiàng)目。

5.days are numbered

numbered有時(shí)日無(wú)多和有限的意思，所以“days are numbered”其實(shí)是表示某人生命已經(jīng)時(shí)日無(wú)多。

The doctors say his days are numbered. They don't have much hope of him surviving this illness.

醫(yī)生說(shuō)他已經(jīng)時(shí)日無(wú)多。他們對(duì)他在這場(chǎng)病中活下來(lái)不抱多大希望。

6.eleventh hour

“eleventh hour”可不是什么“十一點(diǎn)”的意思，它真正的意思是“最后時(shí)刻，剛好來(lái)得及”。

At the eleventh hour, he came first and won the race!

他在最后時(shí)刻得了第一名并且贏得了比賽。

這個(gè)表達(dá)出自圣經(jīng)的《馬太福音》。古時(shí)候，有個(gè)富人想雇幾個(gè)人到他的園子里去干活，他從早上五點(diǎn)就開(kāi)始雇人，雇到最后一個(gè)人時(shí)已經(jīng)是夜里很晚了。干完活后付工錢時(shí)，結(jié)果大早上來(lái)的和夜里來(lái)的都是一樣的工資，于是一大早就開(kāi)始干活的人極為不滿，既然只要不超12點(diǎn)來(lái)做工的工錢都一樣多，那還不如在最后時(shí)刻來(lái)呢。因此“at the eleventh hour”就成為了“在最后時(shí)刻，剛好來(lái)得及”的意思。

那么，可能有小伙伴會(huì)問(wèn)11點(diǎn)怎么說(shuō)，正確表達(dá)是“Eleven o'clock”。

7.crunch time

“crunch time”的意思是“關(guān)鍵時(shí)刻、關(guān)鍵時(shí)間”，在“crunch time”做出的決定都是很重大的決定。

He knew it was crunch time.

他知道這是關(guān)鍵時(shí)刻。

8.carry the day

打游戲的時(shí)候我們經(jīng)常會(huì)遇到carry這個(gè)詞，我carry你啊，帶你上分什么的。但是“carry the day”是什么意思呢？它的意思是“戰(zhàn)勝，獲勝”，形容經(jīng)過(guò)了很長(zhǎng)時(shí)間的對(duì)決最終獲得勝利。

9.big time

“big time”真正的意思是“非常，很多”，等于“very much”或者“a lot”。

You owe me big time because I helped you with your school project.

10.hit the big time

“hit the big time”的意思是“大獲成功”。

After John hit the big time, he became very rich and forgot about all his old friends.

John大獲成功之后，他變得非常富有，把自己所有的老朋友都忘了。

11.five o'clock shadow

千萬(wàn)不要把“five o'clock shadow”翻譯成“5點(diǎn)的影子”，那可鬧大笑話了！它真正的意思是男生一兩天不刮胡子之后臉上出現(xiàn)的毛發(fā)。

You can't go for your interview with a five o'clock shadow! Go and have a shave!

你不能帶著胡子去面試！去刮胡子！

12.a whale of a time

如果玩得很開(kāi)心，就可以說(shuō)“a whale of a time”。

The theme park was so much fun. I had a whale of a time!

主題公園非常有趣。我玩得很開(kāi)心！

13.year in, year out

如果我們想說(shuō)“年復(fù)一年”，就可以用“year in, year out”這個(gè)表達(dá)，即連續(xù)多年每年都會(huì)發(fā)生的事情。

Our family holidays are so boring now. Year in, year out we go to the same holiday resort and stay in the same old hotel!

我們的家庭度假很無(wú)聊。年復(fù)一年都去同樣的度假地待在同樣的老酒店里！

14.a day late and a dollar short

“晚了一天，少了一美元”？其實(shí)它的意思是“差一點(diǎn)點(diǎn)，差一步”，即某件事發(fā)生得有點(diǎn)太晚，不足以接受。

They offered me a contract after I'd already accepted another job offer – a day late and a dollar short!

在我接受了另一份工作之后，他們給了我一份合同——就差一點(diǎn)點(diǎn)！

15.once in a blue moon

藍(lán)色的月亮？其實(shí)它的意思是“千載難逢；極為罕見(jiàn)”。

My grandparents live in Canada. I only get to see them once in a blue moon, because it's very expensive to fly there.

我的祖父母住在加拿大。我難得看他們一次，因?yàn)轱w到那里太貴了。

16.two-time

“two-time”不是兩次！千萬(wàn)不要弄錯(cuò)了，它真正的意思是“背叛自己的另一半，對(duì)愛(ài)情不忠”。

When she found out that he had been two-timing her, she left him instantly.
