What is dreaming and exactly what are dreams? Do they have some meaning and can they influence our lives in some way? And why is it that some people dream a lot and many others don’t seem to dream at all?
What is dreaming and exactly what are dreams?
Do they have some meaning and can they influence our lives in some way?
And why is it that some people dream a lot and many others don’t seem to dream at all?
Dreams are a series of thoughts, images or emotions occurring during sleep.
When we fall asleep, we don’t only close our eyes; our brains will switch off many other things that are not needed while we are sleeping. This is so that we can rest our bodies and our minds, but it also means that our brains are still active and that is when dreams are created.
The brain performs the same way as it does when we are awake, but instead of information being provided to it from exterior sources, the brain now receives information from our interior, some would say our soul.
Dreams can be just a few images or an entire full featured movie that is played out in the mind's eye. The visions can appear subdued or calm, or they can conjure up a frightening experience.
Dreams can be about friends and loved ones or populated by horrifying monsters. Dreams can seem real or create a totally surreal environment.
Dreams can be vivid and full of detail or totally confusing. And dreams may provide us with a sense of direction, or they may leave the dreamer completely baffled by their content.
Our dreaming minds are even capable of recreating familiar scenes and familiar persons with great clarity and incredible attention to detail. We can also create in our dreams originality and different situations without any mental effort.
And there is no experience of writer's block in the mind of the dreamer. Words, sounds and images flow like water from our unconscious, fully copying reality so that we don’t even realize that we are dreaming.
We are totally captivated, both emotionally and intellectually, by all the imaginary realness of the dream.
The Egyptians, believed dreams were the messages sent by the gods to our sleeping minds.
Sigmund Freud thought that dreams could serve as windows into the psyche, revealing unfulfilled wishes, and many of his followers today consider them to be a major tool in psychoanalysis.
Some scientists have theorized that dreams are unnecessary bits of information being deleted nightly from a person's memory, just as a computer cleans unwanted data.
Many of our ancestors regarded sleep as another life, one in which our souls were more active than during our waking hours. Researchers into the paranormal believe dreams may reveal the forces of destiny, the true reality that is about to occur.
There is a mysterious wisdom working in our dreams, which tries to take away our hurt, adjust our bad habits and behaviours and help us to get a better understanding of who we are and exactly what it is that we should do in our lives to become more healthy, happy, free and secure.
